OK...So what is a DPF and what are the signs to look out for before it becomes an issue?
DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) is a filter that captures and stores exhaust soot in order to reduce harmful emissions from diesel cars.
But because they only have a finite capacity, this trapped soot periodically has to be emptied or 'burned off' to regenerate the DPF.
But when they can not clean (regenerate) by them selves due to a blocked DPF, caused by poor servicing and in most cases a continuous number of short car journeys, they need to be looked at immediately.
A faulty Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) can cause a number of symptoms, including:
Engine warning light
The most common indicator of a blocked DPF is the engine warning light on the dashboard.
Reduced power
The vehicle may feel sluggish or struggle to accelerate.
Increased fuel consumption
The vehicle may experience refuelling more frequently without a change in driving habits.
Excessive smoke
The exhaust may emit excessive smoke, particularly during acceleration or high-load conditions.
Strong odour
A hot and strong smell from the engine. The smell may disguise other tell-tale smells that arise if any other issues are affecting your car.
Starting issues
It will get more challenging to start the engine until it won't start at all.
Engine damage
If the DPF is not cleaned/ unblocked or replaced timely, it can cause a back pressure build-up in the engine, leading to severe engine damage.
